Congratulation to Barbara Carlson for receiving the 2018 Presbyterian Women Honorary Life Member Award. Barbara was honored and given a certificate and pin at the PW gathering the evening of May 7. Her husband Jerry shared in the celebration. Below is the write-up on Barbara given by Serita Eisenbies:

Barbara Ellen Carlson with her husband Jerry, joined West Raleigh Presbyterian Church in the fall of 1969. Their children Daniel and Sarah, were raised here in this very same West Raleigh Church and cared for by many of you back in the1960’s through 1970’s   It was a fortunate time for West Raleigh. Barbara became an active member almost immediately by involving herself in Circle 6. In fact, perhaps this Circle would no longer be what it is today without her presence. Moving on, she became Corresponding Secretary on the PW Council. She wrote notes and sent cards to those in need of prayer and caring. The recipients appreciated knowing PW women cared about them and that women were available to assist them in any way. She did these things quietly, with love and concern for all.

An outstanding artist and designer, she readily assisted in the creation of the PW Handbook and activities involving Circle projects including mission projects, visitation, and participation in Circle programs. Barbara served as Deacon for one term and Elder for two terms under three different pastors. She served on the worship committee for many years focusing her talents on decorating for the Christmas season and special occasions. The first “Hanging of the Greens” service began during that time. Although the service has changed somewhat, it remains a major part of worship at Christmas time. When fellow Life Member Rosalee Sloan, needed assistance, she asked Barbara to take responsibility for the task of preparing the tree, decorating the tree and other important details. We should not be surprised to see Barbara take on this responsibility as well as adding handmade chrismons each year involving many members of this congregation. In addition to her service to our congregation, her devotion to Presbyterian Women continued. She was always there to decorate, or set-up or take down or clean up. She was a quiet leader; and she was good at it. She may have been busy, but she was quick to step in and do whatever was needed.

Her talent in the arts also produced the first, handmade paraments in the 1980’s, with others on her committee. Amazingly, Teresa McLean, Carol House, and our Barbara still play a big role in education, fellowship, love and worship in this church.

The committee agrees that Barbara has earned this honor with love and support from so many people. She prefers working in the background, quietly doing her thing. She and her family continue to be an important part in work of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church. There is no other person today who has done so much for so many, so well through Presbyterian Women at our church.

Blessings flow all around us. Congratulations Barbara!
